Artist Ravi Paranjape

Painter-Illustrator Ravi Paranjape (1935–2022)—an eminent illustrator, painter, and writer with an illustrious artistic career spanning over sixty years—was born in the culturally rich town of Belgaum into an artistically oriented family. After completing his education and apprenticeships, he began working as an illustrator, advancing through positions at well-known publication houses and studios in Mumbai. In no time, Paranjape's ever-evolving artistic style made a lasting impression in the world of visual communication arts, both in India and abroad. Having earned recognition and confidence, he soon established his own art studio in Mumbai. Paranjape is credited with pioneering the innovative field of architectural perspective rendering in India—a turning point in his professional career. Despite having an enormously rewarding career as a commercial artist, his heart was set on his passion for painting without boundaries. His remarkably well-received debut exhibition instantly established him as a painter, followed by several more successful exhibitions in India and abroad. Paranjape was also a prolific writer and thinker. He authored several books and articles on art, as well as essays expressing his views on political and social reform, rooted in his theory of a "design-based culture." Ravi Paranjape received numerous prestigious awards recognizing his artistic and literary accomplishments. The Communication Arts Guild (CAG) honored his distinguished commercial art career with the CAG Hall of Fame award. His invaluable contribution to the field of art was further acknowledged with the Dayawati Modi Foundation’s Dayawati Modi Award for Art, Education & Culture and the Roopdhar Lifetime Samman by the Bombay Art Society. His autobiography Brush Mileage, written in Marathi, received the Bhairuratan Damani Sahitya Puraskar for outstanding literary work. Several of his paintings, illustrations, and studies are part of the official collection of the Department of Archaeology and Museums, Ministry of Culture, Government of Maharashtra. Paranjape's deep passion for Hindustani classical music often resonated through his work. With his inimitable style, extraordinary color sense, penchant for orderly yet attractive arrangements, and constant pursuit of harmony among all elements, Paranjape transformed each artwork into a visual melody.
